FORT STOCKTON -- The City of Fort Stockton could soon be drilling for water in a major West Texas aquifer.

The Fort Stockton Pioneer reports that the City of Fort Stockton will soon be applying to drill in the Belding Farms area for water from the Capitan Reef aquifer.

The Capitan Reef aquifer is located in Culberson, Hudspeth, Jeff Davis, Brewster, Pecos, Reeves, Ward and Winkler counties.

Fort Stockton leaders are currently requesting bids for the project.

If the drilling permit is approved, the City of Fort Stockton will have to come before the Middle Pecos Groundwater Conservation District board for permission to drill.

At that time the board will decide as a whole whether or not to allow the city to drill in the Capitan Reef.

If Fort Stockton is allowed to drill the Capitan Reef, official plan on testing the water for potability -- and possible use as drinking water.

Previous tests have reportedly shown that the water could be drinkable after it's been filtered.
