Odessa City Council Approves Fort Stockton's Water Well Testing

ODESSA-- As of Tuesday evening, the Odessa City Council voted to go ahead with the interlocal agreement with the City of Fort Stockton's water plan, in hopes of providing more water to Odessa.
"Currently Fort Stockton has a desal plant and we expect to expand that plant to produce more water and that water can then be forwarded through a pipeline to Odessa" says Odessa's Assistant City Manager, James Zentner.
The plan includes an expansion of Fort Stockton's desalination plant, as well as the construction of a 93-mile pipeline that will be used for bringing some of that water to Odessa.
Zentner says that with the agreement, Odessa is expected to receive 10 million gallons of water per day.
"We need to drill a test well. That test well will allow us to look at the quality of water and the quantity of water" says Zentner.
The Odessa Development Corporation has agreed to give over $1.4 million to Fort Stockton to drill a test well in the Capitan Reef Aquifer near Belding Farms.
"We hope to get this done in the next 60-90 days, in terms of getting the test well drilled and the results. Then we're gonna have to make the decision of whether we're gonna bring water from there or not." says Zentner.
Now that the decision has been made, both Odessa and Fort Stockton need to apply for a permit with the Middle Pecos Water Conservation District in order to start drilling.
As of Tuesday evening, that permit has not yet been filed.
