Energy Workers Seeing Hefty Pay Increases

By: CNN
Updated: October 11, 2012
Big pay hikes in the energy sector are fueling the largest increase in US wages in more than five years.

Data analysis firm PayScale is reporting that mining, oil, and gas exploration workers have seen an average 4.9% wage hike in the past year.

That jump has helped push the average American workers' paycheck 3% higher during the same period.

It's the biggest wage increase since PayScale started monitoring compensation in 2007.

There's been a boon in the oil and gas exploration field, after a brief slowdown early in the recession.

Drilling companies have flocked to places like North Dakota and the northeast, and gas prices have nearly tripled since 2008.

Energy sector workers aren't the only ones seeing a wage hike.

Information technology workers saw increases of 4.5% in the past year, and utility workers are seeing pay checks 4.4% higher.
