Election Season Keeping US Postal Service Afloat

By: CNN
Updated: October 13, 2012

The U.S. Postal Service is having a great month.

Thanks to the 2012 election season,  the service has enough cash to avoid insolvency this month.

The Post Office has been keeping busy shipping mountains of political junk mai, and the Super PACs are paying top postage rates.

Federal candidates, political parties and special interest groups are also mailing out more fliers and postcards than in previous years.

The Center for Responsive Politics says spending topped 28.9 million dollars through the end of August.

That's ten million more than was spent on the entire election cycle in 2008.

The USPS estimates that election mail and the holiday shipping season will carry them through the next few months.

But the service still remains on the edge of bankruptcy.
