Shuttle Endeavour Home in L.A.

The space shuttle Endeavour is now at its new home in Los Angeles, where it goes on display later this month.

The shuttle left Florida last month on top of a customized 747 for a farewell tour across the southern United States, ending at the Los Angeles International Airport.  It took more than two days for the shuttle to inch its way across 12 miles of road from LAX. Dozens of trees were cut down and traffic signs removed to make way.  But, in other cases, the shuttle's self-propelled mobile transporter, capable of turning the shuttle 360 degrees, helped it zigzag its way around obstacles. The mayor of Los Angeles hailed its arrival -- and its significance.

The trip was scheduled to end Saturday night, but police say that obstacles and a mechanical issue slowed the shuttle down.  Endeavour is joining fellow shuttles Discovery, Enterprise and Atlantis as museum pieces. Endeavour goes on public display on October 30th.
