The US Department of Justice is set to release its National Crime Victimization Survey.

The DOJ says its annual report is "the nation's primary source of information on criminal victimization".

It looks at interviews with 75,000 Americans about personal and property crimes such as rape, robbery, burglary, assault and vehicle theft.

The results could have implications for the presidential race, depending on whether the survey shows a decrease or a spike in crime under President Obama.

Officials will make the survey public at 9:00 AM Eastern Time.
