ODESSA -- The City of Odessa is one step closer to possibly getting two new hike and bike trails.

On Tuesday night, the Odessa Parks and Recreation Department got final approval from the Odessa City Council to move forward with funding applications for two new hike and bike trails.

Odessa is applying to TXDOT's Enhancement Program fund to finance the projects.

One proposed hike and bike trail would be located near the intersection of Parks Legado Road and San Machell Drive in East Odessa.

Another proposed trail would be blazed between Pool Road and Clements Street in South Odessa.

"I think we've got 2 good candidates," Odessa Parks and Recreation Director Steve Patton told Big 2. "West Texas, we haven't had any enhancement funds out this direction in a while. I would hope that we have good chances, I know they're good projects and it would be a great benefit to Odessa."

The final grant applications to TXDOT are due on November 16th.

TXDOT will then review all the applications and decide which projects will be awarded funding.

If Odessa is selected, funding will likely be handed out in 2013.
