Some scientists are ringing the alarm over greenhouse gases.

They say there are more in the atmosphere right now, than ever before.

Those are the gases responsible for climate change.

At its global meeting earlier this week, the World Meteorological Organization said the amount of carbon dioxide in the air last year was 40 percent higher than pre-industrial levels.

The WMO says the extra carbon will stay in the atmosphere for centuries and the planet will just keep getting warmer.

Human activities, like fossil fuel burning and tropical deforestation, are the main sources of CO2 in the air.

The other main long-lived greenhouse gases are methane and nitrous oxide.

Scientists say those levels are also increasing.
