MIDLAND--For nearly 30 years, the Midland Soup Kitchen Ministries has been a fixture in Midland providing free meals to those in need. On Christmas eve many came out to receive a free meal and more.

Whether you believe or not, most people still correlate Christmas with the birth of Jesus.

"If we don't share the ministry as a Jesus fulfilled here, we're not doing them justice it we don't tell them about the lord," Nancy Ivy with the Midland Soup Kitchen Ministries.

On Christmas Eve and in the holiday spirit, the soup kitchen held a pre-Christmas feast complete with ham, black eyed peas, green beans, mashed potatoes and for those with a sweet tooth pumpkin pie.

Everyday the soup kitchen offers hot meals to those looking for a plate to eat. People often think soup kitchens are only for the poor, but workers say that's not always the case.

"The fortunate are still needing that help and that feeding," said Ivy.

While they soup kitchen ministry says Christmas isn't about presents they don't mind sharing additional Christmas cheer.

"The children do come and get gifts, Santa is here this year,"

Crystal Blanco and her children were at the feast. "They're excited because they get to open it today so they're really excited that they get to open a present today rather than tomorrow."

For those not looking for a nicely wrapped gift, blankets and other winter gear was handed out for adults along with a small bag of fruit.
