HOUSTON -- Former President George H. W. Bush is said to be in good spirits as he recovers from a fever and bout with bronchitis in the intensive care unit of a Houston hospital.

A Bush family spokesman says the 41st president has been singing with doctors and nurses.

On Thursday, the Bush family said they were confident the former president would soon be released from the ICU.

Doctors had hoped to release him in time for Christmas, but complications from an elevated fever compelled them to keep him a while longer.

At 88 years old, Mister Bush is the oldest living former president.
