PYOTE -- A new rest area is now open along Interstate 20.

TXDOT officials held a ribbon cutting for a pair of new rest stops along the interstate on Thursday afternoon.

The rest stops are located east of Pyote, near the F.M. 115 interchange.

The $14.1 million facilities have several interactive exhibits that showcase the history of the surrounding area -- including a World War II army base that was once located there.

There are also nature trails and playgrounds -- along with plenty of parking -- at the rest stop.

Ground was broken for the project on February 15, 2011, and the previous rest stops located in the area closed on April 11, 2012.

However, TXDOT officials say construction was delayed from the original schedule after a sidewalk shifted due to changing soil conditions.

An additional embankment also had to be built, which raised the price tag for the project slightly.
