CARLSBAD, NM -- A bipartisan commission has been set up to look into candidates for a vacant judgeship in the 5th Judicial District Court.

The Carlsbad Current-Argus reports that the commission will meet on January 29th in Carlsbad.

The meeting will be open to the public.

The commission will recommend candidates to New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez (R), who will then appoint a candidate to replace District Judge J. Richard Brown.

Brown retired in December 2012, so that he could move to New Zealand to practice law.

A similar commission interviewed candidate for another vacancy in the 5th Judicial District Court in 2011.

That commission ultimately chose Carlsbad attorney Lisa Riley for the bench.

Riley was ultimately appointed to a judge.
