EDDY COUNTY -- Two people are killed in an early morning crash on a southern Eddy County road.

The crash happened near mile marker 7 of U.S. 285, south of Loving, around 7 AM Thursday.

According to The Carlsbad Current-Argus, a 2006 white GMC pickup truck was heading south on U.S. 285 when it suddenly crossed the center line and crashed into an oncoming 2012 silver Ford pickup truck and utility trailer.

New Mexico State Police believe that the driver of the GMC -- Dakota Spencer of Carlsbad -- fall asleep at the wheel.

The crash reportedly happened as Spencer was driving some co-workers home after an overnight shift, and no one in the pickup had their seat belts on.

Two of Spencer's passengers died at the scene. Their names haven't been released.

Two other passengers were critically injured, and one of them was flown to University Medical Center in Lubbock for medical care.

Spencer, 20, suffered minor injuries in the wreck.

The driver of the Ford pickup truck -- Jorge Gonzalez of Loving -- wasn't injured.

U.S. 285 was closed in the area for much of Thursday as they investigated the wreck.
