Study Shows Half of World's Food is Wasted

A new study finds that up to half of the world's food is wasted. More than four billion tons of food is produced each year.

The report from the British-based Institution of Mechanical Engineers examined food production and consumption in both developed and developing nations. It found that developing countries lost food to production inefficiencies.

In more advanced societies, like the U-S, food was lost to market and consumer waste. In fact, the study found customers end up throwing away as much as half of what they buy at the store.
