SAN ANGELO---Bishop Michael D. Pfeifer of San Angelo is requesting to suspend the use of the Communion Cup at all masses in the diocese effective Friday, January 11th, 2013 until further notice.

Bishop Pfiefer wrote the following letter to priests of the Diocese of San Agelo:

Dear Brother Priests:

After medical consultation, and to protect the health of all of our people, I am requesting that we suspend the use of the Communion Cup at all masses in the diocese effective Friday, January 11,2013 until further notice. I make this prudential decision based on the fact of the high increase of the cases of flu at this time of the year. Also, as a health precaution, I recommend that we not offer the sign of peace with a handshake. It is best that the exchange of peace be given verbally and perhaps with a simple bow. Once the danger of transmitting the flu has lessened, I will restore the use of the Communion Cup. Please pass this information on to all of our people.

Bishop Michael D. Pfeifer, OMI
