More than a million people trying to buy guns have been turned down since 1998.

That's according to the FBI and the figure comes from data collected during background checks run for gun purchases.

The top reason for denying the sale ... 58-percent of the time the buyer had been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor punishable by more than two years in prison.

Statistics show that only one-percent of potential gun buyers were turned down for mental health reasons.

The National Instant Criminal Background Check system, known as NICS was launched 14 years ago.

According to the F-B-I, out of all the NICS checks run since 1998, only about one-percent resulted in turn downs.
