CARLSBAD, NM -- A bipartisan committee is looking to nominate a new judge in the 5th Judicial District Court in Eddy County, NM.

The Carlsbad Current-Argus reports that the commission interviewed 4 Carlsbad attorneys who are looking to replace J. Richard Brown on the bench.

Denise Madrid Boyea, Janet Ellis, Jay Lynn Francis and Raymond Romero interviewed for the position.

Those interviews -- which were open to the public -- took place at the Eddy County Courthouse Tuesday.

Brown retired in December 2012 and moved to New Zealand.

Brown's wife -- physician Caryn McHarney Brown -- recently accepted a job in New Zealand.

The commission will now give a list of recommended candidates to New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez.

Martinez will then appoint the new judge.
