MIDLAND -- During the recent economic boom in the Permian Basin, Midland and Odessa have regularly had the lowest unemployment rates in Texas.

Now, the Tall City has the lowest unemployment rate in the entire country.

The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that Midland had the lowest unemployment rate (3.1 percent) of any metropolitan area in the United States in December 2012.

The Tall City had placed in the top 10 of metropolitan areas with low unemployment rates regularly for much of 2012.

However, several cities in North Dakota often had slightly lower unemployment rates than Midland.

Both the Permian Basin and North Dakota have seen low unemployment during recent economic booms tied in great part to the oil and gas industry.
