Representatives From 5 States Discuss Lesser Prairie Chicken In Colorado

LAMAR, CO -- Representatives from 5 states and several federal agencies met Monday to discuss a species that could pose significant risk to business in West Texas.
Representatives from Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado met with representatives from several federal agencies about the Lesser Prairie Chicken on Monday.
The meeting -- which was held in Lamar, CO -- was open to the public.
Representatives from the 5 states discussed ways to protect the species without having a negative effect on business in their states.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has recommended that the Lesser Prairie Chicken -- which has a habitat in West Texas and Southeast New Mexico -- be listed as a threatened species.
If the species is officially listed as threatened, it could hurt the ranching and wind farming business in West Texas and Southeast New Mexico.
Texas Governor Rick Perry, New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin, and Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper released a joint statement opposing the proposal to list the species as threatened in January 2013.
A final decision on the listing is expected in the fall.
