MIDLAND -- Midland and Odessa are seeing some incredibly high rent prices because of the oil boom, and many Permian Basin residents are having trouble making ends meet due to the steep cost of living.

However, the Midland County Housing Authority is trying to alleviate some of the financial stress that has come into the conscience of West Texas residents.

The M.C.H.A. set up more than 100 appointments for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program Waiting List on Monday.

The appointments are meant for people who haves low-incomes and see most of their paychecks go towards rent.

"This will help alleviate some of the burden of the rent," Midland County Housing Authority Executive Director Jeanette Castaneda told Big 2. "For some of those families that are paying 70 to 80 percent  of their adjusted income towards rent. [This will help] to lower that, so it leaves more money for them to be able to pay their other expenses."

Ideally, the Housing and Urban Development help will drop rent prices to only about 30 percent of residents monthly income.

The M.C.H.A. will continue taking appointments for housing assistance through February 12th.
