Scott Sommers, 51 was headed north on Tripp Avenue in west Odessa, when he left the road way and over corrected when he ran head on into a utility pole. Sommers was pronounced dead on the scene while his passenger Dale Piper, 56 was taken to the Medical Center Hospital for his injuries.
The Department of Public Safety investigated the accident. They said neither man was wearing a seatbelt.
A witness to the accident said gravel alongside the street may have contributed to the accident.
"Paying attention, you hit that hill and I don't know what they do, but they do kinda just run off on the shoulder ever so often, and there really ain't no guidelines just pavement and dirt and that's it and it's a pretty thin street," said Joseph Roe.
Roe said when he heard the accident, he stepped in to direct traffic away from the scene until officials could get to the scene.
