Sequester Cuts Could Have Wide-Ranging Effects On West Texas

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The White House has released a report, explaining how Texas would be affected if the federal sequester cuts go into effect.
The report shows that cuts would affect a wide range of industries across Texas, including many that have a large presence in West Texas.
If the sequester takes effect, more than $67.8 million in education funding, $1,103,000 million in law enforcement grants, and $2,402,000 million in public health funding could be cut from Texas.
United States Customs and Border Protection would also have to get rid of thousands of agents nationwide, and there could be slowdowns at airports due to staff reductions.
Leasing and development of oil and gas on federal lands would also be cut, since fewer resources would be available for agencies to conduct sales.
The sequester could go into effect on March 1st.
