BREWSTER COUNTY -- Big Bend National Park is one of West Texas' national treasures.

However, the park -- which is located in the midst of an iconic desert landscape -- is bringing plenty of green to the area as well.

A new National Park Service report shows that 361,862 people visited Big Bend National Park in 2011.

Park visitors spent $16,703,000 in nearby communities, and the money helped support 234 jobs in the region.

A nationwide study found other national parks around the country had similar effects on their surrounding communities.

The survey says that 63 percent of the money national park tourists spent in nearby communities in 2011 supported jobs in the lodging, food and beverage service.
