PINE SPRINGS -- Guadalupe Mountains National Park features the tallest peaks in Texas, but it also brings in plenty of money to the economies of West Texas and southeast New Mexico.

A new National Park Service report shows that 152,645 people visited Guadalupe Mountains National Park in 2011.

Park visitors spend $10,919,000 in nearby communities, and the money helped support 165 jobs in the region.

A nationwide study found other national parks around the country had similar effects on their surrounding communities.

In fact, visitors to Big Bend National park in 2011 spent more than $16.7 million in the nearby area.

The survey says that 63 percent of the money national park tourists spent in nearby communities in 2011 supported jobs in the lodging, food and beverage service.
