Conversationists are calling it a sad day for one of the world's most beloved creatures.

A plan to ban the trade of polar bear parts got rejected at an international conference on endangered species.

U.S. conservationists argued the ban was needed to protect the polar bear population, which is already vulnerable due to shrinking Arctic ice.

The National Resources Defense Council warned that polar bears could be extinct in some parts of the world if nothing is done to protect them.

But countries like Canada, which is home to the world's largest polar bear population, denied those claims.

One Canadian group said the polar bear trade is not significant enough to put a major dent in the population.
