WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The final deadline for listing the Lesser Prairie Chicken as a threatened species will not be pushed back.

Congressman Randy Neugebauer and other congress members met with United States Fish and Wildlife Director Dan Ashe about the fowl on March 13th.

Neugebauer says that Ashe doesn't plan on delaying the decision on the proposed listing.

At this time, a final decision on the listing proposal is expected on September 30th.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife officials have said they will reopen the public comment period on the proposed listing, but an exact date hasn't been announced.

The Lesser Prairie Chicken has a habitat in the High Plains region which stretches the Permian Basin on up to Western Kansas and Eastern Colorado.

If the species listed as threatened, federal protections of the habitat could negatively affect wind energy, oil and gas and ranching in the area.

Texas Governor Rick Perry, New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin, and Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper released a joint statement opposing the proposal to list the species as threatened in January 2013.
