MIDLAND -- "Guns on Campus" will be the subject of a free debate on Thursday, March 21, at 7 p.m. at the Wagner Nol Performing Arts Center. Two foremost authorities on gun control issues are being presented as the John Ben Shepperd Public Leadership Institute's Distinguished Lecturers. Dr. Michael Shermer will affirm the resolution that we need more control on guns and Dr. John Lott will deny it.

Dr. Shermer is the founder of Skeptic magazine, a columnist for Scientific American, and adjunct professor at Claremont Graduate University and Chapman University. A psychologist with a long list of academic achievements, he has published books "about how the mind works and how thinking goes wrong." He believes there are rational policies that can reduce the level of violence, and although he is a gun owner and libertarian, he advocates additional gun controls.

Dr. Lott is a well-known opponent of gun control, and his book, More Guns, Less Crime speaks to fewer controls to allow self-preservation from crime and tyranny. His research or faculty appointments have been in economics and have included positions at the University of Chicago, Yale, Stanford, UCLA, Wharton, and Rice.

The JBS Public Leadership Institute has a long tradition of bringing experts onto The University of Texas of the Permian Basin campus to address hot button topics. The lectures are free and open to the public and tickets are not needed. For more information, call 432-552-2850 or e-mail jbs@utpb.edu.
