If you donated to charities in support of Superstorm Sandy victims or the families of Sandy Hook you may not get the tax write-off you were expecting.
Turns out, a number of the charities were not legit and the IRS doesn't offer deductions to phony organizations.
If the IRS catches a taxpayer deducting a donation to a non-eligible organization, the filer has to pay a penalty and any unpaid taxes, as well as interest.
So if you want that deduction, check the IRS search tool before handing over any money.
