MARFA  – Border Patrol agents from Alpine Station seized 2,101 pounds of marijuana in an early morning vehicle stop Tuesday. The driver of the Ford pickup truck was able to get away.

Agents noticed a vehicle traveling on a ranch road near the Altuda area west of Marathon on Monday night. They were unable to consistently monitor the vehicle after the driver turned off his lights. Just after midnight, an agent noticed an older Ford truck on Highway 90 west of the Altuda gate.

When the agent followed, the driver of the vehicle sped up. The vehicle turned up Highway 67 and then purposely ran into a fence. The driver was able to flee and has not been found.

The vehicle contained 1,968 bundles of marijuana with a value of $1,681,080. The vehicle and the marijuana were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

So far this fiscal year, Marfa Sector agents have seized over 37,000 pounds of marijuana.
