Food Vendors Coming to Downtown Midland

Downtown Midland isn't quite like it used to be, but the city is working to get it back to the way it once was and that involves food.
The appeal of having a downtown means everything is in one place and in walking distance. But, as our local economy went through several boom bust cycles in recent year’s businesses and restaurants moved away from downtown...leaving it empty and in need of a facelift. Now the city is committed to taking the necessary steps to bring that appeal back to downtown and they're doing it with a little bit of taste.
"The Mayor and Courtney Sharp, the City Manager decided the new finished Centennial Plaza needed to provide some other food options for downtown workers," says Steven Thorpe, Building Official for the City of Midland.
For people who work downtown, their food options are limited. A typical lunch break is driving 10 to 15 minutes away to grab a quick bite to eat. But, things are about to change.
"We currently have BBQ people interested and hot dogs vendors," says Thorpe.
Starting on Tuesday up to 3 different approved food vendors can set up shop along Texas Avenue just north of Centennial Plaza. Now, going to lunch in downtown midland involves taking a stroll through Centennial Plaza; instead of red lights and bumper to bumper lunch traffic.
"Figure you get to eat where you work, it’s got to be better then getting in a car," explains Thorpe.
The city recently changed the food vendor law. Before, vendors could only be in the same location for 3 days and wait 15 calendar days before going back to that location.
"The Centennial Plaza ordinance allows them to be there for a week, Monday through Saturday, take a week off and come back again," says Thorpe.
A benefit for both the vendor and the city.
Vendors were expected to be at the Plaza today. However, everything has been pushed back for tomorrow. So, if you don't have any lunch plans tomorrow, head out to downtown Midland. Also worth noting, vendors are set up; not only for lunch, but for breakfast and dinner as well.
