It looks like the possibility of another no-kill shelter opening up in Midland may become a reality. Animal control services said they're just waiting to get the go-ahead from PetSmart. Their agreement could be finalized as early as next week.

“For the year so far we've euthanized 2,826… for fiscal year from October," said Animal Control Director Paul O’Neil.

About 35% of those animals were considered adoptable, but ended up at the Midland Animal Shelter because their owners abandoned them.

“If we can, you know reduce the number of adoptable animals that we are euthanizing that would help," O’Neil explained.

The new 2,000 –square- foot no-kill shelter would be located inside PetSmart in Midland. About 20 dog kennels and 10 cat cages would fit in that space.

"We really really need one no question about it," said Midlander Shawn Watson, who would like to see the shelter open.

Brittney Sellers has suffered from seizures her whole life. She tells Big 2 what has kept her going is the love her pets have given her.

"It was really hard but they were always there for me. They always played with me and made me feel comfortable about who I was," Sellers said.

Unconditional love is just what many animals want to get back. The hope is by putting the shelter at PetSmart more of those that care about pets will be able to see them.

"A lot of people want to adopt shelter pets but don't want to come to the shelter to do it because you know it’s to depressing," said O’Neil.

So, hopefully more of these pets will be able to find a new companion and a new home.

O’Neil said the shelter would also save the city money, since euthanizing animals tends to be expensive.

The Midland Humane Coalition is also working hand in hand with animal control to open this shelter.
