Will 14th Amendment Be Changed?

By: Dylan Brooks
Updated: August 11, 2010
If you're born in the United States, you're automatically a United States citizen. The policy is part of the 14th Amendment, which has stood since the Civil War.
But now, some politicians would like to change that amendment, since there are many babies born in the U.S. to illegal immigrants. The amendment would have to be ratified to make a change in citizenship requirements but several Republicans - including some Texas representatives - say they at least want the issue revisited.
"I think that should be the motivation to change the law, so people can't take advantage of our generous welfare system, or take advantage of our taxpayers." U.S. Representative Lamar Smith (TX) said.
