Groups Want Andrews Waste Cotnrol Site Investigated

By: Karl Rundgren
Updated: August 11, 2010
Environmental groups are asking for a federal investigation into the Waste Control Specialists site in Andrews County.
Public citizens and the Sierra Club - along with some people from Andrews and Eunice, NM - say that the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality isn't doing enough to protect people. They believe that the low level radioactive waste disposal sight could pollute groundwater and the Ogallala aquifer.
Now these groups want the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency to look into the matter, before the site is built.
Waste control specialists have said there were rigorous Ttests to ensure that waste couldn't leak into the groundwater, and that the facility has repeatedly shown that it will be safe.
