Around 6:30 pm, black smoke was seen pouring into the sky out of Sams Club. The smoke was visible 10 miles away from the store. Firefighters used a ladder truck to start dousing the fire, while all the shoppers were evacuated.
Big 2 found out that the roof was being repaired by a Houston contractor. The workers had already left for the day when a pile of roofing material apparently caught fire.
The fire was contained to the roof, and firefighters put protective covers on things inside the store to prevent water damage.
