Big Spring’s Narcotics Task Force was formed in 2007. Since then, the unit has made hundreds of drug-related arrests and has seized pounds of illegal drugs.

The team is made up of six officers and a canine. Robert Williams is the only sergeant on Big Spring’s Narcotics Task Force. He said before the narcotics unit existed, drug dealers from larger cities moved to Big Spring, just because of the lack of law enforcement.

“The two years that we didn’t have any narcotics officers actively investigating it got really bad,” said Sgt. Williams. “Once we got the narcotics team up and rolling it put a halt to it.”

Since the unit was created, officers have successfully targeted street to mid-level distributors. They’ve made almost 600 drug -related arrests and have seized pounds of illegal drugs.

But their newest battle: Prescription drugs.

"Mainly hydrocodone, xanax; its people, they'll call in false prescriptions or change their personal prescriptions the doctor gave them to up the quantity,” he said.

Now, the task force is working closely with doctors and pharmacies to put the criminals that are committing medication fraud behind bars.
