Some serious new restrictions are being placed on a diabetes drug.
The F.D.A. now says that Avandia should only be used as a drug of last resort for patients with type two diabetes. The announcement comes after a panel of experts urged more caution, but also asked that the drug be allowed to stay on the market.
Avandia has been linked to a higher risk of heart attack and stroke. In Europe, the European Medicines Agency has asked that Avandia be pulled off the market altogether.
