Wednesday afternoon's school bus accident just north of Big Lake, where a chemical truck crashed into a paused school bus and eight children were injured, raises the question that's recently been the center of controversy: Would there have been fewer injuries if the bus was equipped with seat belts?
The state was supposed to pass a law requiring seat belts in all new school buses in September, and the T.E.A. was ready to provide the funding. Just when things were about take effect, all state agencies, including the T.E.A., had to make budget cuts.
On Friday, Big 2 will speak with D.P.S. to learn the latest developments on this law, and to find out if seat belts could actually increase child safety within a school bus.
