MIDLAND -- Students at Rusk Elementary took a break from school Wednesday morning for their 13th annual Veterans Program.
The program invited around 1,000 veterans and their families to the event Wednesday. They put it on each year to show appreciation to our veterans for all that they've done for our country and our freedom. But it's an important lesson for the students as well.
"[The students] really understand what it means to be American," teacher Crista McPherson told Big 2. "They really understand how privileged we are, and they have a good sense of pride in America."
The event started out in the their school gym with about 350 veterans. Today, it's grown to more than 1000 veterans. It takes place at the C.A.F. hanger near the Midland International Airport.
