ANDREWS -- You now have the chance to voice your opinion on new rules that could allow three dozen states to dump their radioactive waste in Andrews County.
More than two weeks ago, the compact commissioners overseeing the Waste Control Specialists site revised the rules. As it currently stands, Texas and Vermont are part of the deal to dispose of the waste in the Permian Basin. But under the proposed new rules, the compact could be opened to 36 other states, which would be able to apply on a case-by-case basis.
The compact also approved the rules for publication, and they were opened for public comment last Friday. You now have almost a month to share your thoughts. You can email, call, or present your comments in person.
A public meeting is scheduled in Austin for December 9th, and all public comments have to be received by December 26th. After that point, the compact commission will respond to the comments - and then it will decide to either adopt or further amend the rules.
