MIDLAND/ODESSA -- Street signs across America will soon be getting a whole new look. The Federal Highway Administration recently released new federal guidelines for street signs nationwide, to make them easier to read and safer across the country.

People in the Basin will get used to seeing bigger street signs.
Guidelines require that the size of letters on street signs must be increased from 4 to 6 inches by 2012.

Another change is that all signs must have new reflective looking letters so they are more visible at night. here in the Permian Basin we have many signs that require changes.

Some signs already contain the new reflective requirements. The money it costs to fix the signs is $110 per sign. But City Officials in Midland say its not going to break the budget.

"More than likely we've been doing the project and we are spending on an average of our normal operating budget in the range of 25-30,000 a year to change out these signs anyways, we will continue to do that, so its not effecting our off-writing budget not anymore than it already has been," said Transportation Manager, Gary Saunders.

One of the changes that is being done immediately is making sure all signs with upper case lettering be changed to mixed case lettering.

The Federal Government is changing signs in order to make streets safer. City Officials here in the basin say they will have all sign changes completed by the 2018 deadline.
