BIG SPRING -- A fire near Big Spring threatened several homes Tuesday evening and left firefighters scrambling to keep the homes safe.

The fire started along the end of Collins Road, northeast of Big Spring. That area has a lot of brush near a number of homes. Firefighters say that someone was burning trash in that area, and the fire crept out of the pit, caught the brush and began to spread. Before long, that blaze was threatening several homes.

"In all we had right about 10 to 12 houses that were in danger," Howard County Volunteer Fire Chief Josh Sullivan told Big 2.

Firefighters were able to keep the flames away from the homes, and no one was hurt by the fire. That fire was out by around 7:30 PM Tuesday.
