Students can apply now to join the original freedom riders and retrace the 1961 Route. UTPB Professor and author Dr. Derek Catsam, who's featured in a PBS documentary about the Freedom Riders, explains.

WHAT: 2011 Student Freedom Ride applications open now
WHEN: Application deadline January 17, 2010; Ride will be May 6-16, 2011
WHERE: Visit basinpbs.org to apply
WHO: 40 college students from across the country with a broad range of backgrounds will be selected – lending diverse voices to the journey.

On Monday, May 16th at 8pm, Basin PBS and PBS stations nationwide will premiere AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: FREEDOM RIDERS, the first feature-length film about the courageous band of civil-rights activists, black and white Americans, who risked their lives—and many endured savage beatings and imprisonment—for simply traveling together on buses and trains as they journeyed through the Deep South.

The two-hour documentary features the expert interview of University of Texas of the Permian Basin Professor, Derek Catsam, who published “Freedom's Main Line:The Journey of Reconciliation and the Freedom Rides.”

To begin a national conversation about the state of civic engagement today, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE will offer the opportunity for 40 college students from around the country to join the original riders and retrace the route of the 1961 Freedom Rides. This journey will take students from Washington, DC to Jackson, Mississippi, and will provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience history, expenses paid.

The 2011 Student Freedom Ride application site is live, and students may now apply. Winter break is almost here, and with the January 17, 2011 application deadline fast approaching, now is the time for West Texas students to make their application. Students interested in applying to participate in the expenses-paid ride may visit basinpbs.org to watch the Freedom Ride video and click on 2011 Student Freedom Ride to apply.
