MIDLAND  -- Over the New Year's holiday, wildfires burned more than 5,200 acres of land across Texas.

Experts say high winds and dry conditions are setting the stage for massive and destructive fires. That said, there are a number of things you can do to help.

The Texas Forest Service says you should avoid burning trash, avoid tossing cigarettes out the window and keep brush trimmed around your house. You'll also want to keep a fire extinguisher and water handy when working outdoors with welding equipment.
