WASHINGTON, D.C. -- After almost 20 years in the U.S. Senate, Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson has announced that she will not be running for re-election in 2012.

Hutchinson released a statement announcing her retirement Thursday. Hutchinson said that working for the citizens and communities of our state is a privilege. She also said that this announcement should give Texans ample time to consider who her successor will be.

Senator John Cornyn released the following statement about Hutchinson's announcement: "It has been an honor and a privilege to serve with Senator Hutchinson in the United States Senate."
