WASHINGTON, D.C. -- It was supposed to be a great way to stop illegal immigration and protect the border, but it turned into an international joke. Now the border fence with Mexico is being abandoned, long before it's complete.

President Barack Obama chose to end the border plan on Friday, after taxpayers already spent almost $1 billion on it. In many areas, the fence only stretches for a short distance, and people can walk down and around it. In fact, only 53 miles was completed, and it did little to protect the border.
