The Midland native announced his decision Wednesday. The move comes after longtime U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson's recent announcement she won't run for re-election, leaving her seat open in the 2012 election.
Williams says he can better serve the oil and gas industry from Capitol Hill. He will resign his post on April 2nd.
Meanwhile, a former Midlander and former president, has endorsed a different candidate for the post. George H.W. Bush has said he supports former Texas Secretary of State Roger Williams for Senate. He said Roger Williams is a good man, a good friend, and would make a great senator.
Williams has already been campaigning for some time. Williams started campaigning when it appeared Kay Bailey Hutchison was going to resign to run for governor, and he has recently increased efforts across the state.
