AUSTIN -- The first draft of the state budget released in the Texas House last week left Odessa College in jeopardy of being shut down. Now, a West Texas senator is doing all he can to keep the college open.

Senator Kel Seliger announced that the senate has included budget funding for Odessa College and for Frank Phillips college in Borger. Seliger released a statement Monday, saying that "these community colleges play an invaluable role in educating our workforce."

The Texas House proposed cutting all funding to four community colleges based on contact hours, but Seliger noted that Odessa College has raised enrollment by 20 percent since 2007.

"While this is something we did expect, under the current circumstances and with what has happened in the Texas House of Representatives lately, it is heart warming to know that we will indeed receive state funding based on the contact hours we have earned under the community college funding system," Odessa College president Dr. Gregory Williams said in a statement.
