Texas Democratic Party Says SOTU Rings True In Texas

AUSTIN --  Texas Democratic Party Chairman Boyd Richie says President Obama's State of the Union Address last night rings true in Texas.

Richie says the president's thoughts on building the economy, creating jobs and out-educating the nation's competitors were especially resonant for the Lone Star State.

Richie says Obama spoke about cutting the country's debt and deficit in a "responsible manner."  Obama proposed a five-year domestic spending freeze to cut the U.S. deficit by 400-billion dollars over the next decade.

Texas is facing a possible 27-billion-dollar budget shortfall, and both the House and Senate have proposed across the board cuts.

Richie says those budget cuts will threaten countless jobs and the state's economic future.

He says Texas would be unable to achieve its potential with "shortsighted moves that ultimately shortchange" the education system, employment landscape and state's economic security.
