"It's a national awareness campaign to get the word to women that they really can prevent heart disease and they need to take charge of their own heart health," said Bush, a former First Lady.
Local businesses also lead by example, doing their part to spread awareness for women's heart disease. Midland Health Department staffers wore red shirts pm Friday and will be hosting a two day Women's Heart Health Screening at the end of February.
"This is our 7th year doing the campaign joining with the American Heart Association to bring awareness to the women of our community," said Celestino Garcia of Midland Health Dept.
Another business was spreading the word and helping to raise money in a unique way. For every Botox and Dysport injection, the Medical Spa in Midland donated a portion to the American Heart Association.
"Most of my clients are women," said Dr. Mohsin Syed, a Physician at The Medical Spa in Midland. "Most of them are happy to donate."
Across the Permian Basin and the nation, people took part in many different types of events Friday to raise awareness all for one goal.
"Prevention basically," said Dr. Syed. "If we raise awareness people will take steps to prevent the disease."
