Valentines Day Is All About The Roses

MIDLAND -- Valentines Day is best known for its roses. Red roses, to be exact. Turns out, Valentines Day is the biggest single day of the year for the flower industry. i headed on over to bob's floral designs in midland to get inside look on how preparations are going and why roses get more expensive this time of year.
This mess of stems and leaves won't get any neater this weekend. At Bob's Florist Design they're hard at work picking off unwanted messes and making sure everything looks just right for Valentines Day.
"We work very hard, and its exhausting," said Bob Bradshaw, of Bob's Floral Designs. "I really enjoy the thrill to contributing to making a a lot of ladies happy,"
Bradshaw a fourth generation florist.
"Extremely busy," Bradshaw said. "Things are happening, baby."
He's even busier than last year. The cold snap didn't help matters.
"Been busy," said Mandy Green. "Had problems with the weather last week. It slowed us down."
Tabatha and Mandy are Bradshaw's two daughters. They work with him at the shop. It's a family affair. and this time of year, they have one thing on their minds -- fresh roses. But it's no easy find.
"Winter is not the time for roses," said Bradshaw. "Summer is, as far as growing, but biggest demand for roses is this time of year when they are least available,"
Still, roses are what the public demands.
"Red are the all time favorite," said Bradshaw.
That's why Bradshaw's staff is getting ready.
"Long hours," said Green. "Blistered fingers, tired feet."
At the end of the day, Bradshaw says he knows why packing up flowers and making sure they are fresh is so important.
"Flowers are the universal language for love," he said. "And I don't think anything can beat, flowers for that message."
Bradshaw says that he will be taking orders all weekend long, and he doesn't have a deadline. If you need roses, he says he'll try his best to accommodate everyone. Just make sure to give a correct address.
